The Three Levels Of Stuff
We all tend to accumulate more stuff than
we need (a subject for another time!), but even among the items that we do
need, there are different divisions.
Whether you’re dealing with pots, papers, or pants, Clearly efficient offers you a simple way to
divide your possessions into manageable categories so you can access and
appreciate all your belongings when and where you need them.
First, there are the high traffic
items, the things you use and access regularly – be it daily, weekly, or
monthly. These could be your favorite shoes, saucepan, or CDs. We call this Level
I: Action. On the second level are the things you need to keep on hand,
even though you don’t use them too frequently, such as credit card bills,
bathing suits, or an industrial mixer. We call this Level II: Reference.
(The items in these two categories tend to shift seasonally from more to less
frequent use.) Finally, there are the items you need to hold onto, but which
you almost never need to access. This is Level III: Archive, and it
consists of items such as old tax records or a wedding dress. These items are
precious and important and often require special modes of storage to preserve
them in their proper condition.
Now that you have your possessions
categorized according to frequency of use, you can assign them the right homes
with the right accessibility.
- Level I: Action: Most accessible
- Level II: Reference: Somewhat accessible
- Level III: Archive: Long-term storage
Everyone’s space and needs are different, but
with these tips you can begin to manage your stuff and see your way clearly to a more efficient and
productive lifestyle!
