Common areas of challenge
when downsizing your home:
Kitchens:
- Kitchens tend to be much
smaller with less storage space. Be ready to use that space more efficiently.
- Multi-use products: ex. adjustable
measuring cup – you only need one, instead of a whole set.
Storage:
- Store Wisely: Separate
items that you need to access regularly from those you don’t, storing each
appropriately (i.e. less frequent use = less accessible placement).
- Think out of the box: make
your spaces serve your needs, not the other way around. Consider using the
linen closet for gift wrap or game storage, or as a message center.
- Downsize your collections:
from your linens to your paper towel supply, these items take up valuable
space. You may no longer be able to keep so large a quantity on hand.
Furniture:
- Choose pieces that are in
scale with the new home and will not overwhelm the space.
- Look for pieces that
double as storage, such as benches or side tables with drawers.
- Remember that the storage
solutions built into your home are not your only options. Seek the advice of a
professional organizer for space planning and storage solutions that are
catered to your needs and style.
